What a Port Drayage and Trucking Company Sells For

Trucks, drivers and a few big shippers decide the price. Tampa Business Brokers Lab explains what buyers check in a drayage or regional hauling company.

Likely Buyers

Larger carrier
Wants your drivers, equipment and customers to fill out its Florida routes.
Logistics company
Brings hauling in house to serve its own shipper clients.
Experienced fleet manager
Has years at a carrier and buys a smaller fleet with financing.

Customer Concentration Is the First Question

Drayage companies often depend on a handful of importers, forwarders or steamship lines. When the top few customers pass about fifteen to twenty percent of revenue, buyers discount the price, sometimes by about that share.

If one of your customers is bought by a larger company, it may change carriers. Diversifying takes years, so start before you list.

Drivers and Equipment

Buyers ask whether drivers are employees or owner operators, how long they have stayed and who manages dispatch. They also inspect trucks, chassis and trailers, and compare maintenance costs with what your books show.

Update your asset list with VINs, ages and liens so nothing surprises the lender.

Authority and Port Access

Operating authority, insurance and any port access credentials are tied to specific companies or people. The customs and importer checklist covers related items for companies that also handle import paperwork.

Fuel, Rates and Margins

Buyers read the multi year story. If margins fall while revenue holds, they ask about fuel, driver pay and rate cuts. Be ready to explain each move.

A written transition plan helps. Offer a fixed handoff period, and keep customer introductions in writing.

What Makes Yours Stand Out

  • Customers spread across many shippers and lanes
  • Drivers with long tenure and clean records
  • Well maintained equipment with documented service
  • Books that reconcile with bank statements
